Tygart Valley Jail Overview
Tygart Valley Regional Jail and Correctional Facility is operated by the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Bureau of Prisons and Jails. It is not a sheriff-run Barbour County jail building. The Barbour County Sheriff's Office makes arrests, serves process, provides court security, and transports prisoners, but the jail population is held through the regional jail system.
The facility serves Randolph, Tucker, Barbour, Preston, and Pocahontas counties. WVDCR describes the Tygart Valley population as pretrial felons and misdemeanants plus sentenced felons and misdemeanants. The PREA audit also describes male and female housing and classification levels from minimum to maximum, which means custody level can vary widely inside the same building.
This regional role matters for Barbour County inmate search. A person arrested in Philippi, Belington, or elsewhere in Barbour County may appear on the Barbour County Sheriff's Office roster first, but location and custody status should be checked through the broader WV regional jail tools when the local roster does not answer the question.

Tygart Valley Capacity
WVDCR's FY2025 annual report gives Tygart Valley a rated population of 368 and an FY2025 average daily count of 431. Using that annual-report rated-population figure, the average daily count was above rated population. A separate PREA audit used a different capacity figure of 468, so the two numbers should not be blended into one capacity claim.
The FY2025 annual report also listed 2,493 admissions in one Tygart Valley admissions table and named Bryan Lanham as superintendent. The research notes a separate multi-year admission sequence for Tygart Valley, with the displayed values moving from 2,702 in the first listed fiscal year to 2,374 in the last listed fiscal year, subject to the report's visual table labels.

Search Tygart Valley Inmates
For a Barbour County jail inmate, start with the Barbour County Sheriff's Office inmate roster. It is a browse-style public roster, not a name-search form. When inspected on July 2, 2026, it showed booking photos, names, booking numbers, booking dates and times, and charge lines, but it did not show bond, housing, court dates, arresting agency, or release status.
If the person is not visible there, use the WV Regional Jail offender search. That search requires at least three letters of the last name and can take an optional first name. The Daily Incarcerations portal is useful for county and institution lists, while the WVDCR prison and supervision locator is for prison, parole, or active supervision status after a person leaves jail custody.
- Open the Barbour County roster and scan current booking entries by name, booking number, booking date, and charge text.
- Search the WV Regional Jail offender search when the county roster is missing a recent arrest, transfer, or name variant.
- Use Daily Incarcerations if the question is whether a county or institution had new admissions on a date.
- Call Tygart Valley at (304) 637-0382 before relying on a roster entry for release, bond, or visit planning.
Note: A charge on the roster is a custody label, not proof of conviction or the final court charge.
Tygart Valley Contact
The official facility contact is the jail's direct information line. The county sheriff page points jail administration and inmate custody questions to the same regional jail phone number, which confirms that Tygart Valley is the practical jail contact for Barbour County custody questions.

Tygart Valley Visitation
Tygart Valley visits are non-contact and must be scheduled in advance. The WVDCR visitation rules say the inmate must submit TVRJ Form 5-0029, Request for Scheduled Visitation, to the Visitation OA between 8 a.m. Monday and noon Thursday of the week before the requested visit. Facility notaries cannot notarize visitation forms, so notarization must happen outside the facility when needed.
Visits are 30 minutes unless prior approval is granted. The research did not locate a walk-in visitation option, visitor parking map, public transit route, or ADA entrance description. Visitors should rely on the facility address, the official rules, and a direct phone confirmation before travel.

Tygart Valley Mail and Money
WVDCR uses a centralized letter-mail process. The statewide mail instructions say letters must be addressed with the inmate's first and last name, OID number, full facility name without abbreviations, and PO Box 336, Phoenix, MD 21131. The sender must include a full return address with first and last name. Photographs are not allowed in this mail process.
Money deposits use ConnectNetwork by phone, web, or app. WVDCR also identifies GettingOut as the calling and video services vendor. A Tygart-specific fee table was not located in the official pages, so fees should be checked with the vendor before sending funds.

Tygart Valley Booking
A typical Barbour County jail path is arrest or court commitment, transport to the regional jail, booking, classification, initial court appearance, then release, continued pretrial detention, or transfer after sentencing. The public Barbour roster confirms that booking records are assigned a booking number and a booking date/time, and that a photo and charge text may appear on the public entry.
The roster does not show bond amounts, court dates, release status, housing units, or holds. Those gaps are important. Bond and court-date questions should be checked with Barbour County Magistrate Court or Circuit Clerk, while custody and release processing should be confirmed with Tygart Valley. Holds, detainers, probation or parole matters, federal cases, and ICE custody can all change what happens after booking.
- Booking
- The jail intake record created after arrest or court commitment.
- Detainer
- A request from another agency or jurisdiction to hold or notify before release.
- Classification
- The custody-level review used to decide housing and security needs.
- Pretrial detainee
- A person held before the criminal case is resolved.
Tygart Valley Court Questions
Tygart Valley can confirm jail custody better than the online roster can, but it is not the final source for a court case. Barbour Magistrate Court handles many early criminal matters, including initial proceedings and warrant-related work. Circuit Court handles felony and circuit-level case records. Court records after a jail arrest can differ from the booking charge because prosecutors may amend, reduce, dismiss, or present charges to a grand jury.
For bond orders, court dates, and copies of filings, use the Magistrate Case Record Search or the West Virginia Judiciary court-record access page, then contact the proper clerk. The Magistrate Clerk is listed at (304) 457-3676, and the Circuit Clerk is listed at (304) 457-3454.
Tygart Valley Conditions
The PREA audit describes Tygart Valley as a minimum-to-maximum classification facility with male and female inmates and no open-bay dormitory housing. The research did not locate a Barbour-specific jail program list, grievance process, medical-request process, GED schedule, or substance-abuse program page in the inspected official sources.
Barbour County Community Corrections is separate from jail custody and lists local phones for community-corrections work, along with Tygart Valley, Huttonsville, and Pruntytown contacts. Huttonsville and Pruntytown are nearby state correctional contacts named by the county page, not Barbour County detention facilities. If a person has been sentenced and moved from regional jail custody, use the WVDCR DOC locator rather than the Barbour jail roster.
Note: Confirm custody, visit approval, mail rules, and release status directly with Tygart Valley before traveling or sending funds.
